The Shira Route ascends Kilimanjaro from the western side, leading climbers through Barafu camp and Stella Point, then descending via the Mweka Route and Millennium camp. This route offers an opportunity to traverse an alpine plateau, venture through the caldera of Shira volcano, and explore the captivating rock formations of the plateau. Spanning over 8 days, this route allows for ample acclimatization time while providing magnificent views of the glacier-clad crater rim. As the route progresses, it merges with other trails, culminating in the final ascent to the summit.
The Shira Route, although less commonly used, shares similarities with the Lemosho route. In fact, Shira was the original trail, while Lemosho represents an improved variation. While Shira offers a diverse and picturesque experience, it is considered less preferable compared to Lemosho due to its relatively higher starting altitude, which is quickly accessed by vehicle. Climbers may experience some altitude-related symptoms on the first day while camping at 11,800 feet.
Beginning near Shira Ridge, the route commences with a lengthy drive from Moshi, bypassing the rainforest zone. Hiking begins on Shira Ridge itself. The Shira route then crosses the entire Shira Plateau, delivering a pleasant and relatively flat trek from west to east. Further along, the route traverses beneath Kilimanjaro's Southern Ice Field, following a path known as the Southern Circuit, before reaching the summit via Barafu. The descent is accomplished through the Mweka route.
