The Machame Route, commonly referred to as the "Whiskey" route, commences at Machame Gate situated on the lush southern base of the mountain within its verdant rainforest.
This trail entails ascending to the Shira Plateau and traversing beneath Kilimanjaro's Southern Icefield. Our final summit push will be made from Barafu Hut. The entire duration of the journey on the mountain spans a total of 6 days.
Day 1: Nairobi - Arusha
Following breakfast, our team will pick you up from your hotel in Nairobi. We will then proceed towards Arusha, passing through Namanga border town for immigration formalities. The rest of the afternoon will be at your leisure. Overnight stay at a hotel in Arusha.Day 2: Arusha - Machame
Begin your journey to Kilimanjaro National Park after an early start. Upon reaching the park gate, we will proceed directly to the Machame Hut campsite, with an average hiking time of 6 hours. Meals will be provided, and overnight accommodation will be in tents. The altitude at Machame Hut is approximately 3,100m.Day 3: Machame - Shira
After breakfast, embark on a 4-hour hike to Shira Hut. The trek takes you through the rainforest, past the valley, and a steep rocky ridge that ends at a river gorge. Rest, dinner, and overnight stay will be at the Shira Hut campsite, located at an altitude of 3,658Day 4: Shira - Barranco
Continue the hike from Shira to Barranco Hut, with an average hiking time of 6 hours. We will bypass the lava tower and the second junction, reaching the arrow glacier at an altitude of 4,876m. Descend to the Barranco Hut campsite, where we will spend our third night on Kilimanjaro, at an altitude of 3,860m.Day 5: Barranco - Barafu
After breakfast, leave Barranco and proceed to the Karanga Valley, joining the Mweka trail. Hike to Barafu Hut, where we will set up camp. This part of the journey takes approximately 8 hours. Enjoy dinner and overnight stay at the hut campsite, situated at an altitude of 4,600m, with the possibility of sighting both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.Day 6: Barafu - Mweka via Stella Point and Uhuru Peak
Rise early and make your way to Stella Point, reaching an altitude of 5,745m, before heading towards the summit, Uhuru Peak, which stands at 5,896m above sea level. This leg of the hike takes around 6 hours. Descend to the Mweka Hut campsite, situated at 3,100m above sea level. The descent typically takes about 5 hours. Enjoy dinner and overnight stay.Day 7: Mweka - Arusha
After breakfast, descend to the Mweka Park Gate, with an average hiking time of 4 hours. From there, we will drive back to Arusha for an overnight stay.Day 8: Arusha - Nairobi
Following breakfast, depart from Arusha and travel back to Nairobi on the morning or afternoon shuttle. Arrival in Nairobi is expected at 01:00 p.m. or 06:30 p.m.
